ECB warns surging defence spending could stoke inflation across eurozone

16 sources
  • ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane warned Monday that the eurozone's rapid defence build-up could push up long-term borrowing costs and fuel inflation.
  • Defence spending across the EU hit €418 billion in 2025, nearly double the €218 billion spent in 2021, with 14 euro area countries activating fiscal escape clauses.
  • Lane said at a Dublin panel that fiscal multiplier outcomes remain highly uncertain, depending on how spending is financed and how much flows to non-European suppliers.
