This Privacy Policy explains how updater.news (“updater.news”, “we”, “us” or “our”) collects, uses and protects information about visitors to our website (the “Site”). We are committed to processing personal data in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679, the “GDPR”) and other applicable data-protection laws.

updater.news is an automated, multilingual news service that curates and republishes news stories from third-party sources, with inline citations, and displays publicly available market data. You do not need to create an account to read the Site.

1. Who is responsible for your data

updater.news acts as the “data controller” for the personal data described in this Policy. If you have any questions about this Policy or how we handle your data, you can contact us at [email protected].

2. What data we collect

We keep data collection to a minimum. Depending on how you use the Site, we may process the following:

2.1 Information you give us

  • Correspondence. If you email us (for example at [email protected]), we receive your email address and the contents of your message.

2.2 Information collected automatically

  • Server and security logs. Like most websites, our hosting provider and content delivery network (for example, Cloudflare) automatically record technical data such as your IP address, browser type, device information, referring pages, and the date and time of your request. This data is used to deliver the Site, maintain security and prevent abuse.
  • Usage and analytics data. Where you consent, we use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the Site (see Section 4).

We do not knowingly collect special categories of personal data (such as health, political or religious information), and we do not ask you to provide them.

3. Cookies and similar technologies

A cookie is a small text file stored on your device. We use the following categories:

  • Essential cookies — required for the Site to function (for example, to remember your language or display preferences and to keep the Site secure). These do not require consent.

We use Google Analytics, a web-analytics service provided by Google Ireland Limited and Google LLC (“Google”). Google Analytics helps us understand aggregate visitor behaviour — for example, which articles are read, which languages are used, and how visitors navigate the Site.

Google Analytics uses cookies and similar identifiers to collect information such as your approximate location (derived from a truncated IP address), device and browser type, and the pages you visit. Our configuration uses Google Analytics 4, which does not log or store full IP addresses.

Google processes this information on our behalf and may transfer it to servers located outside your country, including the United States. Such transfers are protected by appropriate safeguards, such as the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework and/or the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.

5. Legal bases for processing (GDPR)

We rely on the following legal bases under Article 6(1) GDPR:

  • Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) — for operating, securing and improving the Site, and for responding to your correspondence, provided these interests are not overridden by your rights.
  • Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)) — where we must retain or disclose data to comply with the law.

  • To operate, maintain and deliver the Site and its content in your chosen language.
  • To secure the Site and prevent fraud, abuse and technical attacks.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects on you.

7. Who we share data with

We share personal data only with service providers who process it on our behalf, and only as necessary. These include:

  • Hosting and CDN providers — to deliver and secure the Site.
  • Google (Analytics) — to provide the analytics described above.

9. How long we keep data

  • Server and security logs are typically retained for a short period and then deleted or anonymised.
  • Analytics data is retained according to our Google Analytics configuration.
  • Email correspondence is kept for as long as needed to handle your request and for a reasonable period afterwards.

11. Third-party links and sources

updater.news curates news from third-party sources and links to the original publishers as citations. When you follow a link away from the Site, you leave our control and become subject to the privacy practices of that third party. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of external sites, and we encourage you to review their policies.

12. Children’s privacy

The Site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

13. Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data against loss, misuse and unauthorised access. However, no method of transmission or storage over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

14. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Significant changes will be highlighted on the Site where appropriate. Your continued use of the Site after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
