asml+1trendforce+1bloomberg+1ASML Holding , the world's sole supplier of extreme ultraviolet lithography systems, has locked in commitments from the three leading chipmakers to adopt its High-NA EUV equipment, marking a coordinated industry push to meet surging demand for artificial intelligence processors.
In a series of joint announcements issued on Monday ahead of the SPIE Bacus Conference, ASML outlined agreements with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. , Samsung Electronics, and Intel to transition from the industry's decades-old 6-inch photomask format to larger 12-inch masks optimized for High-NA EUV lithography. The roadmap calls for a 12-inch mask pilot line by 2031, with full lithography system readiness for advanced-node production by 2033.asml+2
Samsung plans to introduce ASML's High-NA EUV lithography into DRAM high-volume manufacturing by 2028, which would make it the first in the industry to do so for memory chips. TSMC intends to begin using High-NA technology for advanced logic nodes starting in 2030. Intel, which has already installed High-NA machines at its fabs, rounds out the trio of adopters.trendforce+4
The High-NA EUV systems, which can cost up to $400 million each, represent a leap in resolution that enables chipmakers to print features roughly 1.7 times smaller than previous-generation EUV tools, nearly tripling transistor density. That capability is central to producing the next wave of AI processors, where packing more transistors onto a chip translates directly into greater computational power.bloomberg+1
The transition to 12-inch photomasks is expected to increase fab productivity, lower chipmaking costs, and remove "stitching" constraints that currently limit chip design flexibility, according to Samsung's announcement. The semiconductor industry has relied on the 6-inch format for decades, making this one of the most consequential infrastructure shifts in recent memory.digitimes+1
The announcements come amid a period of extraordinary demand for ASML's equipment. Earlier this year, SK Hynix placed a $7.9 billion order for ASML's EUV systems, the largest single order in the company's history. ASML has reaffirmed its 2030 revenue target of €44 billion to €60 billion.247wallst
The coordinated commitment by the three chipmakers most capable of manufacturing at the leading edge underscores ASML's unrivaled position as gatekeeper to the future of semiconductor scaling — and the industry's collective bet that AI demand will justify the enormous capital investment required to get there.
