reutersreutersreuters+1Fresh off a turbulent Hong Kong stock market debut, Shein is turning to acquisitions to convince investors it can become more than a fast-fashion retailer. The company, sitting on roughly $15 billion in cash and another $1.74 billion raised through its IPO, has confirmed plans to acquire U.S. apparel brand Everlane for $80 million as the first test of a broader platform strategy, according to Reuters.reuters
The Everlane deal is a "dry run" for what Shein envisions as an acquisition-led expansion across different price segments, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. The company plans to integrate acquired brands into its "Xcelerator" program, which offers access to its manufacturing network, warehousing, logistics, and global distribution platform.reuters
Shein began trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on September 1 after years of failed attempts to list in New York and London. Shares closed on Friday at HK$38.14, more than 20 percent below the IPO offer price, which had already valued the company at roughly $26.5 billion — a steep decline from its $100 billion private-market peak.reuters+3
Investors have yet to price in a successful transformation into a multi-brand platform, said Louise Déglise-Favre, lead apparel analyst at GlobalData. She noted that building a brand portfolio takes years, while Shein's revenue is under pressure now from the removal of the U.S. "de minimis" duty-free exemption for small parcels. Sales growth slowed to 1.1 percent in the first quarter of 2026, down from 8 percent for all of 2025.reuters+1
The Everlane acquisition, first reported in May, has drawn pushback from Everlane's customer base, whose loyalty rests on the brand's commitments to organic materials, factory transparency, and sustainability — values at odds with Shein's polyester-heavy, opaque supply chain. Everlane CEO Alfred Chang told employees the brand would remain independent and true to its sustainability commitments.puck+1
Michael Gunther, senior vice president at Consumer Edge, said the deal could help Shein reach higher-income shoppers outside its core audience. But analysts cautioned that one acquisition alone will not be enough. "Acquisitions can give Shein another growth engine, but they cannot substitute for improving the economics of the core business," said Jianggan Li, CEO of consultancy Momentum Works. "What matters is whether Shein can prove this is a repeatable model."reuters
