  • Mount Mantap, site of six underground nuclear tests from 2006 to 2017, experienced 1,399 previously unrecognized earthquakes through 2025, according to a study in Science.
  • Unlike typical post-blast tremors that fade within weeks, seismicity began escalating roughly three weeks after the 2017 test and has continued to intensify, researchers said.
  • Columbia University seismologist Paul Richards called the situation "potentially dangerous," warning the ongoing quakes could also complicate nuclear test monitoring efforts.
