New CRISPR technique destroys cancer cells by shredding their DNA

14 sources
  • Jennifer Doudna's lab engineered a CRISPR system called Cas12a2 that detects mutant p53 RNA and shreds all genetic material inside cancer cells.
  • The mutation targeted is found in up to 70–90% of some of the deadliest cancers, and no approved drug against p53 currently exists.
  • The system proved effective in mouse models of lung and liver tumors, and can be reprogrammed to target other cancer mutations, according to the researchers.
