gadgets360+1indiatoday+1techcrunchMeta is shifting how it charges businesses for AI-powered customer interactions on WhatsApp, moving from a per-message billing model to a token-based pricing structure that will take effect on August 1, 2026.
Under the new system, businesses using the Meta Business Agent on the WhatsApp Business Platform will pay a flat global rate of $2 per one million tokens. A typical customer interaction consumes roughly 20,000 to 25,000 tokens, translating to approximately 4 to 5 cents per exchange. Shorter queries will cost less, while more complex conversations requiring additional processing will cost more.gadgets360+3
Meta said the pricing reflects the actual token consumption required to process a user's prompt and generate an AI response. Customers will be billed directly by Meta, with no separate charge for message delivery, unlike other message types on the platform.moneycontrol
The Meta Business Agent, which became available globally in early June, can answer customer questions, recommend products, book appointments, qualify sales leads, and escalate queries to a human agent when needed.techcrunch
Alongside the token-based pricing, Meta will reinstate per-message charges for non-template service messages beginning October 1, 2026, nearly two years after waiving those fees. Any non-template message not generated by Meta Business Agent will be classified as a service message and billed at rates that vary by market. In India, such messages are currently priced at approximately Rs. 0.115 per message. Meta said it may update rates quarterly and will publish October pricing by September 1.indiatoday+2
The pricing change is one element of Meta's wider strategy to generate revenue from its AI investments. In late May, the company announced subscription plans under the Meta One branding, including Meta One Plus at $7.99 per month and Meta One Premium at $19.99 per month for enhanced AI capabilities. Consumer subscriptions for Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus, and WhatsApp Plus also launched globally, offering app-specific features for a few dollars monthly.cnbc+1
Meta has framed these moves as a way to offset its substantial AI infrastructure spending while maintaining free access to basic features across its platforms.finance.yahoo
