Manchester Museum reconsiders display of ancient Egyptian mummy

  • Manchester Museum is conducting a public consultation asking visitors whether to continue displaying the 2,700-year-old mummified remains of Asru, an ancient Egyptian woman whose body has been on exhibit for nearly 200 years since being unwrapped in 1825.
  • Asru's mummified body and coffins were acquired in Egypt by cotton merchants Robert and William Garnett in the early 1800s and donated to the Manchester Natural History Society, with her remains unwrapped in April 1825 as both investigation and entertainment, which was common practice in 19th century learned societies.
  • The museum has placed a small plaque beside her remains inviting visitors to share their thoughts on her future display as part of the institution's broader reconsideration of how it cares for human remains in its collection, marking 200 years since her unwrapping.
  • This consultation is part of a wider conversation UK museums are having about their colonial histories and collections, with the Manchester Museum stating that "decolonising" is an "integral part" of its mission and acknowledging the "true, violent history of colonialism".
  • Asru was the daughter of Pa-Kush, meaning "the Kushite Man," who held the title "Document Scribe of the Southern Region" and likely lived at the end of Egypt's 25th Dynasty of Kushite rulers, giving insight into her family's prosperity and multicultural heritage.
