Copper nears record highs as US, China drain global stocks

  • Copper futures pushed past $14,000 a ton this week, nearing January's record above $14,500, as US-bound shipments hit a 12-year high ahead of a possible tariff decision.
  • LME warehouse stocks dropped to 223,000 metric tons by Aug. 7, with major traders including Trafigura and Mercuria withdrawing thousands of tons daily, according to Bloomberg.
  • Citigroup strategist Tom Mulqueen said ongoing inventory draws could push prices toward $15,000 a ton if supply constraints persist.
