reutersgxpnews+1ad-hoc-newsNovo Nordisk announced on Thursday that China's National Medical Products Administration approved Wegovy as the first GLP-1 receptor agonist indicated for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, or MASH, in adult patients with moderate-to-severe liver fibrosis, opening a new front for the blockbuster drug in the world's second-largest pharmaceutical market.devdiscourse+2
The decision makes Wegovy the only GLP-1 RA approved in China specifically for MASH, a progressive form of fatty liver disease that can lead to cirrhosis. "The liver health-related benefits evidence extends the established evidence for Wegovy from weight management and cardiovascular health to liver health, further supporting its role in the comprehensive management of obesity and related complications," the company said in a statement.reuters
The China MASH approval adds to Wegovy's established uses in weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction, and follows a similar approval by the UK's MHRA in July 2026. Jia Jidong, director of the Liver Disease Research Centre at Beijing Friendship Hospital, said the approval "opens new treatment possibilities for patients with metabolic steatohepatitis, shifting clinical practice from 'managing a single risk' to 'simultaneously controlling risks and treating the disease'". In August, China had already granted approval for an oral version of Wegovy for its primary obesity indication.www+1
Analysts at HSBC raised their price target on Novo Nordisk to DKK 320 from DKK 300, pointing to the expanded opportunity in China's GLP-1 segment, estimated at several billion dollars annually. Barclays moved in the opposite direction, trimming its target to DKK 300 from DKK 310 and citing pipeline risks, including Novo Nordisk's recent decision to halt two clinical trials for its cardiovascular candidate ziltivekimab.ad-hoc-news
Separately, Novo Nordisk reported positive results from its Phase 3 STEP Young trial, showing that 40.4 percent of children aged 6 to under 12 treated with once-weekly semaglutide were no longer classified as having obesity after 68 weeks, compared with placebo. The company plans to present full data at ObesityWeek 2026 in November.reuters+2
Novo Nordisk is also in the midst of a DKK 15 billion share buyback program. As of September 4, the company had repurchased 32 million B shares at an average price of DKK 281.63, totaling DKK 9.02 billion since the program began in February.ad-hoc-news
The China approval and pediatric data arrive as Novo Nordisk's shares have declined roughly 12 percent year to date, with Wall Street expecting modest revenue and earnings contraction in fiscal 2026 amid pricing pressure in some markets. Whether the new MASH indication can translate quickly into incremental sales remains the central question for investors.ad-hoc-news
