  • A Nature Communications study published Thursday found that 2,000 to 5,000 metric tons of uranium left the DRC in cobalt shipments over two decades without being declared.
  • Researchers at UW–Madison and Princeton say the undeclared material could theoretically yield fissile material for hundreds of nuclear weapons.
  • The study also warns that up to 4,000 metric tons of uranium were dumped in mine waste, posing health risks to miners and nearby communities.
