Named after NASA's first chief astronomer — known as the "mother of the Hubble Space Telescope" — Roman is designed to settle essential questions in the areas of dark energy, exoplanets, and infrared astrophysics. According to Julie McEnery, senior project scientist, Roman can produce 500 terabytes of data per year, surpassing the total data captured by Hubble in its 35 years of service. "Roman has broadly the same sensitivity and sharpness of vision as Hubble, but we survey the sky much faster, so that one month of observations to survey our Milky Way galaxy would take about a century with Hubble," McEnery said.explained
The telescope will operate from Lagrange Point 2, a gravitationally stable region about a million miles from Earth where the James Webb Space Telescope also resides. Roman's primary science goals center on three cosmic mysteries. The telescope will study how the distribution of galaxies has changed throughout cosmic history and observe Type Ia supernovae to measure the universe's accelerating expansion driven by dark energy, which makes up about 68 percent of the total energy content of the cosmos. It will also map dark matter, the invisible gravitational scaffolding that holds galaxies together.stsci+1
On exoplanets, Roman is projected to discover as many as 200,000 potential planets beyond the solar system using gravitational microlensing, including types never surveyed before. Its coronagraphic instrument will block starlight to directly image exoplanets and planet-forming disks.planetary+2
Rather than competing with the James Webb Space Telescope, Roman is designed to work in tandem. Roman will capture wide-field images 50 times larger than Webb's field of view, identifying targets for Webb to examine in closer detail. Jackie Townsend, Roman's project manager, said the telescope is now in its final pre-launch preparations, with encapsulation inside its payload fairing expected around the third week of August.explained
