The observatory's second instrument, its Coronagraph, is the most sophisticated optical observation instrument ever deployed in space, according to Oliver Krause of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, whose team built precision alignment mechanisms for the device. Roman's primary science program targets one of cosmology's most pressing problems: the roughly 8 percent disagreement between two methods of measuring the universe's expansion rate, known as the Hubble tension. Beyond cosmology, Roman is expected to discover more than 100,000 transiting exoplanets and over 1,000 worlds through gravitational microlensing by monitoring 100 million stars over hundreds of days. After launch, the telescope will travel to the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, roughly one million miles from Earth, where commissioning will take approximately 90 days.
