  • An international team published the first global map of underground arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal networks in the journal Science on Wednesday.
  • The networks span an estimated 110 quadrillion kilometers of filaments in topsoils and weigh about 300 megatons of carbon, according to the study.
  • Researchers warn that agricultural expansion has halved fungal density in croplands, with 95% of fungal biodiversity hotspots lying outside protected areas.
