  • A study published Wednesday in Science estimates the world may have had 20,000 to 75,000 languages at its peak, up to 10 times more than today.
  • Researchers from the U.S., Spain, and Germany traced the decline to expanding empires and states, not just modern colonialism.
  • About 44% of today's surviving languages are classified as endangered, with projections warning of at least one language lost per month.
