Rubin Observatory in Chile has released a sweeping image of the cosmos containing more than 500,000 galaxies and 50,000 stars, created by the world's largest digital camera. The image, assembled from hundreds of individual observations, offers one of the most detailed views ever produced of a well-studied patch of sky known as the COSMOS field, marking an early achievement for an instrument designed to survey the universe for a decade.petapixel+1
The image was captured using the observatory's 3.2-gigapixel LSST Camera, a roughly 6,600-pound instrument about the size of a small car, mounted on the 8.4-meter Simonyi Survey Telescope atop Cerro Pachón in the Chilean Andes. Rather than a single exposure, astronomers stacked hundreds of separate observations to draw out extremely faint light from distant objects, revealing spiral galaxies with defined arms, smooth elliptical galaxies, merging systems, and ancient red galaxies from the early universe.thebridgechronicle+2
The release forms part of the observatory's Early Data Preview 2, which combines science validation observations collected between April 2025 and January 2026 and covers approximately 3,000 square degrees of the southern sky — roughly one-sixth of the visible Southern Hemisphere.moneycontrol+1
The COSMOS field has been a focal point of astronomy since the Hubble Space Telescope first studied it beginning in 2003. Located away from the crowded central plane of the Milky Way, it offers a relatively clear window into the distant universe, free of much stellar and dust interference. Because light from the most remote galaxies has traveled billions of years to reach Earth, the field effectively doubles as a time machine, allowing scientists to observe different epochs of cosmic history in a single dataset.timesnownews+1
Rubin Observatory plans to image COSMOS repeatedly over its ten-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time, tracking transient and variable phenomena such as supernovae. "The COSMOS deep image is just the beginning for Rubin in this region," said Bob Blum, Director of Rubin Observatory at NSF NOIRLab. During its primary mission, the LSST Camera will capture 700 high-resolution images every night for a decade, building the most continuously updated record of the sky ever produced. Phil Marshall, Deputy Director of Rubin Observatory at SLAC, called the COSMOS field "very valuable as a testing ground for scientists as they get ready to take on the survey data." The observatory's data — currently shared among U.S., Chilean, and international partner institutions — is expected to become publicly available within two years.zamin+1
