  • The World Meteorological Organization on Monday warned that increasingly intense wildfires and heatwaves are undermining efforts to improve global air quality.
  • The agency's annual bulletin says wildfire smoke particles are "much more toxic" than industrial emissions, and conventional risk models may underestimate fire-related deaths by up to 93%.
  • Over 600,000 hectares have burned in EU countries in 2026's first eight months, more than double the 20-year average, with fire risk spreading to northern Europe.
