cnbc+1cnevpost+1reuters+2Tesla delivered 126,157 vehicles in China during the second quarter of 2026, accounting for just 26.28% of its global deliveries — the first time the figure has fallen below 30% since late 2020, according to CnEVPost data published Thursday. The decline in China's share came even as Tesla posted record Q2 global deliveries of 480,126 vehicles, up 25% year-over-year and far above Wall Street's consensus estimate of roughly 403,000 units.cnevpost+2
The divergence underscores a shift in Tesla's geographic mix. While the company's Shanghai factory posted its highest monthly wholesale volume of 2026 in June — 89,091 units, up 24.43% year-on-year according to China Passenger Car Association data — much of that output was directed toward exports rather than domestic sales. Tesla China's Q2 wholesale volume, which includes both local sales and exports, totaled 254,551 units, meaning roughly half of those vehicles left the country, primarily destined for Europe.cnevpost+1
China's domestic retail sales for Tesla dropped 2.05% year-on-year in the quarter, even as the broader Chinese EV market saw intensifying competition. Leapmotor overtook Tesla's domestic volumes in June with 93,376 global deliveries, a 94.5% year-on-year jump. BYD remained the dominant force, posting passenger NEV sales of 397,292 units in June alone, though its own China sales fell 22% year-on-year as the company increasingly relied on record overseas shipments of 175,349 vehicles.cnevpost+4
The broader Chinese NEV market has been marked by diverging fortunes. While startups like Leapmotor, NIO , and XPeng each posted their strongest months of the year in June, established players have struggled with domestic demand. BYD's first-half sales fell 15.72% from a year earlier, and Tesla's retail market share in China hit its lowest point since November 2025 earlier this spring.electriccarsreport+2
Tesla's rebound globally was driven largely by a recovery in Europe and continued strong energy storage deployments of 13.5 GWh. The company plans to report full Q2 financial results on July 22.cnbc+1
