  • Archäologen haben ein 250 Jahre altes Schiffswrack, das von einem Schuljungen auf der Insel Sanday in Orkney entdeckt wurde, als die Earl of Chatham, ehemals HMS Hind, identifiziert – eine Fregatte der Royal Navy, die im Amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg im Einsatz war.
  • Das Schiff wurde 1749 gebaut, nahm in den 1750er Jahren an den Belagerungen von Louisbourg und Quebec teil und diente im späten 18. Jahrhundert während des Amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges als Geleitschutz, bevor es 1784 außer Dienst gestellt wurde.
  • Nach seinem Militärdienst wurde das Schiff in Earl of Chatham umbenannt und zu einem 500-Tonnen-Walfangschiff umgebaut, das vier Arktis-Saisons absolvierte, bevor es im März 1788 in der Bay of Lopness strandete, wobei alle 56 Besatzungsmitglieder überlebten.
  • Das Wrack tauchte im Februar 2024 auf, nachdem Winterstürme den schützenden Sand wegspülten, der es jahrhundertelang verborgen hatte, was lokale Landwirte dazu veranlasste, 12 Tonnen Eichenholz mit Traktoren vom Strand zu bergen.
  • Dendrochronologische Analysen ergaben, dass das Schiff aus Holz aus Südengland gebaut wurde, und Forscher nutzten Archivunterlagen sowie die detektivische Arbeit der Gemeinde, um das Schiff durch ein Ausschlussverfahren zu identifizieren.
