ts2+1ts2businesstimesThe Bank of Japan is widely expected to lift its overnight policy rate by 25 basis points to 1.25% at its two-day monetary policy meeting on Wednesday and Thursday, a move that would push borrowing costs to their highest level since 1995 and mark the second increase in just three months.ts2+2
The decision itself holds few surprises. Four people familiar with the central bank's thinking told Reuters that a quarter-point hike is the most likely outcome, and markets have fully priced it in. Dodan Research puts the probability at 98%. The more consequential moment will come at Governor Kazuo Ueda's post-meeting press conference, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Tokyo time on Sept. 18, where his guidance on the pace of future tightening could move markets far more than the rate decision itself.mk+2
The economic case for tightening has strengthened. Japan's producer price index rose 7.6% year-on-year in August, the third consecutive month above 7%. Core consumer inflation has climbed steadily, from 1.4% in May to 1.8% in July, trending toward the BOJ's 2% target. Oil above $100 a barrel, driven by the ongoing Middle East conflict, is adding further upward pressure on import and energy costs.fxempire+3
Japan's August national consumer price report, due the same morning as the rate decision, will land just hours before Ueda speaks — giving investors an unusually concentrated burst of information.businesstimes+1
The hike puts the BOJ on a direct collision course with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's expansionary fiscal agenda. Takaichi has committed over 370 trillion yen to investments in artificial intelligence and semiconductors under her "Sanaenomics" program, aimed at boosting supply-side growth. Hosaka Yuji, a professor at Korea University, told the Chosun Ilbo that the policy misalignment is precarious: "It's questionable how long a government trying to inject money and a central bank raising rates can continue".chosun
BOJ board member Kazuyuki Masu recently argued that rates must exit their "actual negative state" and rise within the neutral range of 1.1% to 2.5% to prevent excessive corporate investment and real estate speculation.mk
Economists polled by Reuters expect the policy rate to reach 1.5% by the end of March 2027 and 1.75% in the following quarter. Whether Ueda validates or pushes back against that trajectory will determine how USD/JPY trades in the days ahead. The pair fell 1.7% last week to 153.554, already reflecting a material repricing.ts2
The rate decision also arrives during a packed week for global central banks. The U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to raise rates on Sept. 16, and the Bank of England meets Sept. 17, creating what Bloomberg described as a potential picture of "an increasingly synchronized hawkish policy stance across the G7".moneycontrol+1
