Astronomers discover ‘black hole star,’ an entirely new type of cosmic object

  • MIT astronomers identified a "black hole star" — a solar-system-sized gas cocoon powered by a central black hole — in the early universe using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.
  • The object, named MoM-BH-1, emits 100 billion times more energy than any known star, according to a study published Wednesday in *Nature.
  • The discovery could explain the mysterious "little red dots" appearing in nearly every deep-space JWST image, which researchers say may each be black hole stars.
