  • Ett team lett av Pieter van Dokkum vid Yale upptäckte krökta chockvågor i Helixnebulosan med hjälp av det nya MOTHRA-teleskopet, enligt en studie som publicerades på onsdagen i Nature.
  • Chockvågorna visar fragment av stjärnrester som eroderas under cirka 10 000 år innan de blandas in i interstellär gas som kan så frön till framtida stjärnor och planeter.
  • Upptäckten skedde av en slump under ett kalibreringstest, där MOTHRA endast använde en bråkdel av sina planerade 1 140 linser; full drift förväntas tidigt 2027.
