Matt Walker, a geneticist at Kindred Companion Sciences, used CRISPR technology to produce two beagle puppies — Bailey and Alfie — whose saliva and hair no longer contain Can f 1, the primary protein responsible for triggering dog allergies in humans. Walker and his team used CRISPR-Cas9 to edit the genetic code inside dog skin cells, introducing a single-letter insertion into the Can f 1 gene that prevents the protein from being produced. The edited cells were then used in somatic cell nuclear transfer — the same cloning technique behind Dolly the sheep — to create embryos implanted into a beagle surrogate. Of 25 embryos, two developed into healthy female puppies born in September 2024.newstalkzb+1
Scientists collected saliva, hair, and dander samples from the edited beagles alongside samples from a normal beagle, a standard poodle, and a goldendoodle. Using a Western blot analysis, they found that all conventional dogs produced Can f 1, while Bailey and Alfie did not.newstalkzb
In a skin-prick allergy test, Walker reacted to poodle and goldendoodle samples but showed no response to extracts from Bailey and Alfie. The findings also reinforced what allergy specialists have long noted: breeds marketed as hypoallergenic, including poodles, still produce the allergy-causing protein.yahoo+2
Commercialization remains years away. Scientists must monitor the long-term health effects of the genetic modification and develop affordable methods for scaling the approach. Walker noted that the edit occurs naturally in some dogs, suggesting it is unlikely to harm the animals.newser
Bioethicist Arthur Caplan of New York University's Grossman School of Medicine raised concerns about unintended consequences for animal welfare. "It opens the door to a lot more people being able to own pets. On the negative side, it may discourage people from trying to use strays and unwanted animals that are not engineered to be allergy-free," he said.newser
Because Can f 1 is the main but not the sole allergen in dogs, Dr. Jeff SoRelle, a pathologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, cautioned that "we don't exactly know just how effective or broadly useful this could be for stopping dog allergy in humans."newser
