notebookcheckthewrapnotebookcheck+1Rockstar Games Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. last week offered the most detailed look yet at Grand Theft Auto VI, airing a nearly 30-minute gameplay showcase on Netflix before uploading it to YouTube Alphabet Inc. . The footage, captured entirely on PlayStation 5, showed off the game's reimagined Vice City, dual protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and a suite of new mechanics ahead of the November 19 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The premiere also delivered a measurable jolt to Netflix. U.S. app downloads for the streamer rose 24% compared with the previous day, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, with iOS downloads jumping 54% and the Netflix app climbing from 96th to 35th on the App Store's free apps chart. Pre-orders for GTA VI surged 436% on the day of the broadcast, with PlayStation pre-orders up 606% and Xbox up 127%. Sensor Tower had already logged 4.55 million pre-orders before the special aired.thewrap+1
Rockstar North co-head Aaron Garbut told The New York Times that the studio created an entirely new team of writers, directors, and producers focused solely on non-player characters. "We art-directed each individual one of them," Garbut said, describing a world with over 600,000 animations — more than ten times the roughly 55,000 in GTA V. "Every room in the game, somebody thought about this. Who's sitting where, what they're drinking, the marks that are left on the table," he added. Fellow co-head Rob Nelson told IGN that the game is so large "I don't know that there's anybody on the team that knows all of it".ign+1
In a hands-on preview session at Rockstar's Edinburgh headquarters, Nelson confirmed to Kinda Funny Games hosts Andy Cortez and Greg Miller that GTA VI's single-player campaign contains no real-money purchases and that generative AI played no part in the game's development. The stance aligns with earlier comments from Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick, who said in February that generative AI has no role in what Rockstar is building. Rockstar declined to comment on the future of GTA Online, where Shark Cards have served as the franchise's monetization engine for over a decade.notebookcheck
The extended look revealed a revamped six-star wanted system with "Heat" icons tracking how police identify suspects by appearance, weapons, and vehicles, allowing players to evade law enforcement through disguises and car swaps. Side activities range from basketball and scuba diving to dirt biking and base jumping, while a character fitness system ties eating and exercise habits to in-game statistics. A social media feed called Snapmatic lets players scroll through posts from in-game characters and contacts. The game world spans urban Vice City, suburban neighborhoods, beaches, and Everglades-inspired swamplands navigable by airboat.hardwarezone+1
