gtaboom+1comicbasics+1daily+1Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders are closing in on five million units with less than three months until launch, fueled by a massive surge following the game's first extended gameplay showcase on August 27. Close to 90% of buyers have opted for the pricier Ultimate Edition, a ratio one industry analyst called unprecedented.
Rockstar Games's parent company Take-Two Interactive opened pre-orders for GTA 6 on June 25, and demand has climbed steadily since. Analytics firm Sensor Tower, which has been running a public sales tracker for the title, estimated the total at roughly 4.38 million units as of mid-August, generating an estimated $429 million in revenue. About 77% of those orders were on PlayStation 5, with Xbox accounting for the remaining 23%.gtaboom+1
The release of "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look," a 26-minute gameplay showcase that premiered on Netflix on August 27, sent those numbers sharply higher. According to Sensor Tower data reported by GTABoom, pre-orders jumped approximately 436% on the day of the reveal compared to the prior day, with PlayStation orders spiking around 606%. Over the two days surrounding the premiere, pre-orders ran roughly 572% above the previous month's daily average, pushing the total near 4.6 million before the showcase had even fully settled.gtaboom+1
Perhaps more remarkable than the raw volume is how buyers are spending. Sensor Tower data published by GamesIndustry.biz showed that 89% of all pre-orders were for the $100 Ultimate Edition rather than the $80 standard version. Karl Kontus, general manager of Video Game Insights at Sensor Tower, told GamesIndustry.biz that a 50% premium share during pre-orders would already be considered strong, with typical premium shares landing between 10% and 20%. "That being said, I have never seen a 90% premium share before," he said.comicbasics+2
The Ultimate Edition includes exclusive vehicles, weapons, and access to in-game stores not available to standard buyers. Kontus has projected that total pre-orders could reach as high as 25 million units by the November 19 launch, translating to roughly $2 billion in advance revenue.daily+1
The hype extends beyond sales figures. A study by José Montalvo, professor of economics at Pompeu Fabra University, estimated that mass absenteeism on launch day — Thursday, November 19 — could cost the U.S. economy more than $1 billion in lost productivity. The research projects a temporary 2% drop in labor productivity, with young men aged 18 to 30 and the technology sector expected to be most affected.rockstarintel+1
Meanwhile, Rockstar has begun distributing exclusive merchandise to select content creators. Australian YouTuber TGG revealed he received a custom LED neon sign featuring the GTA 6 logo, claiming it is one of only four ever made. Spanish creator El Rubius appears to be the only other confirmed recipient. No consumer merchandise has been announced, though Rockstar operates an existing merch store for its other titles.gamerant
