Moon’s water can’t sustain a large city beyond a century, study finds

  • A study published Sunday in Frontiers in Space Technologies found the Moon's estimated billion tons of water ice could sustain a million-person city for only about a century with ISS-level recycling.
  • Researchers Martin Elvis and Jonathan McDowell noted that more realistic water estimates are roughly 30 times lower, meaning a large settlement could run dry within years.
  • Smaller outposts of up to 10,000 people could last centuries, and the team said deeper reserves or improved recycling could eventually change the outlook.
