The announcements, outlined in a blog post by James Manyika, Google's senior vice president of research, labs, technology and society, mark the company's latest effort to position its AI capabilities as tools for public benefit across health, climate resilience, education, and economic opportunity.blog
AlphaGenome Atlas builds on DeepMind's AlphaGenome model, released last year, which predicts how single DNA letter changes — known as single-nucleotide variants — affect cellular behavior. The atlas computed predictions for each of the three possible nucleotide substitutions at every position in the human genome, producing roughly one petabyte of data now freely available to researchers. The tool extends a lineage that includes the Nobel Prize-winning AlphaFold, which has predicted all 200 million known protein structures and is used by 4 million researchers in 190 countries.nature+1
Google also highlighted progress in disease detection, including a breast cancer study with Imperial College London and the U.K.'s National Health Service showing AI can identify 25% of interval cancers previously missed in mammograms of 175,000 women.blog
WeatherNext 3 combines real-time satellite observations with AI to deliver high-resolution, hourly forecasts with 50% more accurate precipitation predictions at least a day ahead, according to Google. The model is designed to improve forecasting in data-sparse regions that have historically lacked access to high-resolution weather tools.techbeat+1
Google also introduced the Earth AI Planetary Prediction Engine, an autonomous system that uses natural language instructions to predict global crises. During the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the engine identified 83% of emerging hotspots ahead of time.blog
Google said its technologies now support more than 300 languages spoken by 7 billion people, covering 86% of the global population. Alongside the language milestone, the company released the AI & Economy ATLAS, a research initiative mapping how people use AI tools at work and in daily life.
