cnbc+1cnbccnbcApple held its "Surprise and Shine" event on Wednesday, September 9, marking new CEO John Ternus' first product showcase and the company's most sweeping hardware announcement in years. The lineup included Apple's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, AirPods 5, and a raft of new Apple Intelligence features.
Perhaps the most consequential move for investors, however, was what Apple chose not to announce: a standard iPhone 18. The decision to hold the base-model iPhone for a separate spring event represents the biggest change to Apple's iPhone release cadence in seven years.cnbc
Since introducing the iPhone 11 Pro line, Apple has released its standard and Pro iPhones together each fall. That era is now over. Analysts say the split-launch approach is designed to smooth Apple's historically lopsided revenue, which surges in the holiday quarter and dips sharply in the months that follow.cnbc
"When Apple puts all the focus on the last quarter of the year, of course that generates quite strong revenues, but they were missing when the second quarter comes along with much lower sales," said Francisco Jeronimo, a vice president at IDC. The move also eases supply chain pressure. Releasing two new models instead of four simplifies procurement at a time when high memory prices are squeezing margins, according to Neil Shah, vice president of research at Counterpoint Research.cnbc
The least expensive new iPhone announced Wednesday was the iPhone 18 Pro, starting at $1,199 — a $100 increase. Apple also raised the price of the existing iPhone 17 to $899, following Mac and iPad price hikes in June tied to what former CEO Tim Cook called "unsustainable" component shortages.cnbc
The foldable iPhone Duo, starting at $1,999, features a 7.6-inch display that is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen. It supports Apple Pencil and multitasking with two apps simultaneously. The device is powered by Apple's second-generation in-house C2 modem, which the company says is 50 percent faster than its predecessor while using 15 percent less energy. Pre-orders open October 16, with availability on October 23. Most other products ship September 18.axios+2
Apple also debuted the Apple Watch Series 12, which includes higher-frequency heart rate sensing and a redesigned Health app, starting at $399. AirPods 5, with improved noise cancellation and live translation, start at $129.foxbusiness
Apple Intelligence was threaded throughout the event. New features include Live Rewind on Apple Watch, which displays text snippets of recently spoken words, and Siri Recap, which generates daily conversation summaries that auto-delete after seven days. On the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple introduced Reference Image, a camera mode that creates signed, unalterable proof a photo has not been manipulated.axios
"The symbolism of a company like Apple tackling the problem of trust in the visual record is significant," said Hany Farid, a deepfake and computational photography expert.axios
IDC group vice president Tom Mainelli said Apple is "attempting to walk a fine line between always-listening ambient AI computing and its desire to respect the user's privacy" — a balancing act that will define much of the company's AI roadmap under Ternus.axios
