The discovery, published Friday in the journal Science, marks the earliest known evidence of complex wooden tool technology in the region and reveals that ancient humans relied heavily on plant-based diets rather than hunting.
The tools were found preserved in oxygen-deprived clay sediments at the Gantangqing site in Yunnan province, challenging long-held assumptions about technological development in prehistoric East Asia.
The wooden artifacts, crafted primarily from pine and hardwoods, include digging sticks and unique hook-shaped implements designed for harvesting underground plants. Researchers from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences led the excavation, which also yielded stone tools, animal fossils, and plant remains.uow+3
