Webb telescope spots most primitive galaxy ever found

  • JWST captured the faintest, most chemically primitive star-forming galaxy ever observed, dubbed LAP1-B, according to a study published Wednesday in Nature.
  • The galaxy's light, magnified 100 times by gravitational lensing, required over 30 hours of spectroscopy to reveal its record-low oxygen abundance.
  • Researchers say LAP1-B's chemistry and dark-matter-dominated mass make it a near-perfect ancestor of ultra-faint dwarf "fossil galaxies" near the Milky Way.
