wtvbam+1electrekindustriall-unionSweden's largest industrial union, IF Metall, announced on Thursday that it is ending all industrial action against Tesla effective August 19, after the electric carmaker bought out every one of its striking members. The nearly three-year dispute, which began on October 27, 2023, is Sweden's longest strike in modern history.wtvbam+1
The union said the decision was straightforward: with no members remaining at Tesla, the strike can no longer have any effect. "Tesla has bought out all of our striking members at the company," IF Metall said in its statement. "This does not mean that the fundamental issue behind the conflict has changed."industriall-union
The conflict began when roughly 120 Tesla mechanics across seven Swedish workshops walked off the job after the company refused to sign a collective bargaining agreement, known as a kollektivavtal, which covers nearly 90% of Swedish employees. The strike escalated as sympathy actions spread across Nordic unions — dockworkers refused to unload Teslas at ports, postal workers stopped delivering license plates, and electricians declined to service chargers.electrek+1
Tesla routed around the blockade by importing cars through Germany and securing license plates through the courts. CEO Elon Musk called the Swedish model "insane," and the company never budged. The Swedish National Mediation Office ended its attempts to broker a deal in September 2025, saying it had "reached the end of the road."lemonde
Rather than sign a collective agreement, Tesla used its financial resources to buy out striking workers one by one until no one remained. "We can conclude that Tesla is so strongly opposed to collective agreements that they would rather buy out employees who are members of the union than give them safe conditions," IF Metall said, calling the tactic "unprecedented in the Swedish labour market."investing
IndustriALL Global Union general secretary Atle Høie said: "There seems to be no limits to the length Tesla would go to keep unions out of their operations. Unfortunately they have managed to pay their way out in Sweden."industriall-union
IF Metall chair Marie Nilsson called the striking workers "union heroes" who made "enormous personal sacrifice," while the union pledged to continue fighting for collective bargaining rights. The strike never dented Tesla's Swedish sales during 2023 and 2024 — the Model Y was the country's best-selling car both years — though registrations collapsed by roughly 67% in 2025, a decline attributed to political backlash against Musk rather than the labor dispute.electrek
The question now facing European labor organizers is whether Tesla's playbook in Sweden will embolden the company to resist unionization efforts elsewhere on the continent, particularly in Germany where IG Metall has sought to organize workers at its Grünheide factory.electrek
