  • Forskare vid Griffith University har hittat spår av arekolin, betelnötens psykoaktiva förening, i tänderna hos två forntida samlare från Sulawesi, enligt en studie publicerad i Science Advances.
  • Den äldre individen levde för upp till 25 000 år sedan, vilket gör detta till det tidigaste kända exemplet på regelbunden droganvändning, och överträffar 13 000 år gammal ölbryggning som tidigare ansågs vara det äldsta beviset.
  • Huvudförfattaren professor Adam Brumm säger att nöt-sugandet troligen började som smärtlindring men skapade en "ond cirkel" av förvärrade tandskador och fortsatt användning.
