OpenAI says new models sharply improve at COBOL coding

  • OpenAI said Monday its newest models write and migrate code far better in low-resource languages like COBOL, Fortran and Visual Basic.
  • COBOL underpins over 40% of online banking and 95% of ATM transactions, but models have scant training data for it, OpenAI said.
  • The company designed both tests itself without outside verification and says production use still requires expert review against business rules.
