yahooyahooyahooNATO on Tuesday firmly rejected a Russian warning that any military action against the Kaliningrad exclave could be met with nuclear force, calling Moscow's rhetoric "irresponsible" as tensions over the Baltic enclave continue to escalate.
"We strongly denounce the threat of force, including any irresponsible nuclear rhetoric," NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart said in response to a letter from the Russian government, according to a report by DPA. "NATO is a defensive alliance and none of our activities or exercises pose a risk to any part of Russia."yahoo
The Russian letter, seen by DPA, accused NATO of an "unprecedented escalation of the military-political situation" around Kaliningrad and warned of a "direct armed conflict with the possibility of Russian strikes against decision-making centres of the alliance's member states."yahoo
"Russia will be ready to use the entire arsenal of forces and capabilities at its disposal, including nuclear weapons, in order to defend its territory, should NATO countries undertake any attempt aimed at isolating the Kaliningrad region from the rest of the country," the letter stated.yahoo
Separately, Russia's embassy in the UK issued a pointed response to recent British media coverage examining Kaliningrad's strategic vulnerability. The embassy referenced an article in the i Paper and Sky News's "The Wargame," a documentary mini-series in which real political figures participate in a simulated Russian attack on UK soil. "Those advocating plans to blockade or strike Kaliningrad should have no illusions about the consequences," the embassy said.londonlovesbusiness
Within NATO, Moscow's letter is primarily seen as a reaction to an air exercise conducted in mid-August that was designed to demonstrate the alliance's ability to control the Kaliningrad exclave in the event of Russian aggression against NATO territory. Poland's Defence Ministry described the exercise as a demonstration of rapid response capability.yahoo
Kaliningrad, a Russian territory on the Baltic Sea separated from the Russian mainland by NATO member states Poland and Lithuania, is home to Russia's Baltic Sea Fleet and an estimated 12,000 troops. The territory's position near the Suwałki Gap — a roughly 60-mile corridor between Poland and Lithuania — makes it one of the most sensitive strategic pressure points between Russia and NATO.londonlovesbusiness
Hart reiterated the alliance's commitment to Ukraine and dismissed Russian hybrid tactics as "a sign of desperation." She added: "We have what it takes to defend every inch of Allied territory and remain strong, ready, and able to counter any threat."yahoo
There is currently no indication that NATO is preparing military action against Kaliningrad. The exchange nonetheless underscores how even hypothetical discussions of the exclave's vulnerability can prompt escalatory rhetoric from Moscow.londonlovesbusiness
