reuters.com.theverge.com.insideevs.com+1.Tesla plans to wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas Gigafactory around the middle of 2027. Elon Musk wrote in an X post on Friday, November 6, that the company will be "winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production". The decision sets Tesla's struggling angular pickup aside in favor of the driverless two-seater Musk has made central to his plan to turn Tesla into an AI and robotics company.finance.yahoo.com+1
Musk did not say whether Cybertruck production would move to another plant or end altogether. The Austin plant is the only Tesla facility known to build the truck and its specialized components, so moving it would be difficult. Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill suggested the model is being retired, writing that the truck "was an incredible technology development platform and lives on through Cybercab". Musk agreed with a fan who called the Cybertruck "the best vehicle Tesla has ever made," and added that "the Cybertruck fleet will be around for a long time".theverge.com+2
At about the same time as the announcement, Tesla stopped taking orders for the entry-level Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive version, so only the Premium and Cyberbeast trims remain available to order. Musk did not say whether the change would affect jobs at the plant.cbsaustin.com+1
Musk once promoted the Cybertruck as a rival to pickups from established automakers such as Ford. Since its 2023 launch, though, the truck has dealt with several recalls, quality problems, and repeated price changes. Tesla does not report Cybertruck sales on their own. Even the highest analyst estimates put total deliveries at about 70,000, far below the 250,000 a year Musk once predicted.businesstimes.com.sg+1
The Cybercab, which has no steering wheel or pedals, began carrying paying passengers in a small Austin fleet in September. On Tesla's earnings call last month, vehicle engineering vice president Lars Moravy said the company aims to make the robotaxi available for customers to buy by the end of 2026. Musk added that most Cybercabs will be owned by Tesla and run in its robotaxi service.finance.yahoo.com+1
Regulators are still asking questions about the vehicle. Tesla has yet to answer the U.S. auto safety agency on whether it properly self-certified that the Cybercab meets federal motor vehicle safety standards.finance.yahoo.com
