thejournalcrncrnMicrosoft has unveiled a sweeping redesign of its Copilot AI assistant, introducing three new modes and shifting its small-business licensing to usage-based billing by default starting Nov. 2. The changes mark the company's clearest move yet to split AI work into two commercial tiers: routine tasks covered by a flat subscription and complex agentic work billed by consumption.
The redesigned Copilot centers on three capabilities: Home, Code, and Autopilot. Home combines Chat, for quick answers and drafts, with Cowork, which handles delegated tasks such as preparing briefings or pulling together proposal responses. Code, powered by GitHub Copilot technology, lets users describe a tracker, dashboard, or workflow in plain language and have Copilot build it in a sandboxed environment. Autopilot, previously known as Scout, is designed for work that stretches over hours or days — following discussions, checking in with stakeholders, or keeping projects moving. "Give it a name, a role, and a goal," Microsoft said.thejournal
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are also being brought into the Copilot app, allowing users to create and edit documents without leaving the experience. Home and Code will begin rolling out through Microsoft's Frontier early access program in the coming weeks, with Autopilot expanding to private preview.thejournal
The pricing overhaul splits Copilot into "everyday AI" and "advanced AI." Everyday tasks — summarizing documents, turning meeting transcripts into bullet points — remain under the per-user subscription license at $30 per month. Users can select from models including GPT-5.6 and Sonnet 5, with Opus 5 expected to follow with limits. Nicole Herskowitz, corporate vice president of Microsoft 365 and Copilot, said most users never hit the fair-use caps. "Think of our commercial model as a plug-in hybrid," she said. "The USL is the battery: It covers most of your driving at a fixed monthly cost. UBB is the gas tank there when a task needs more range".crn
Advanced work — Cowork, Code, Autopilot, and frontier models — runs on Copilot Credits priced at one cent each. For enterprise tenants, usage-based features remain off until an administrator creates a spending policy, and no charges accrue before that step. Administrators can set tenant-, group-, and user-level budgets with threshold alerts. Microsoft also introduced FinOps for AI, a cost governance tool covering Code and Copilot Managed Runtime, with Copilot Studio agent support expected in October.futurumgroup+2
Piper Sandler analyst Billy Fitzsimmons raised his price target on Microsoft to $610 from $550, maintaining an Overweight rating. Fitzsimmons estimated that Microsoft could generate $2 billion in incremental revenue if 10 percent of its roughly 118 million E3, E5, and E7 commercial seats upgrade to the $99-per-month E7 bundle, which includes Copilot. He also projected the Copilot app itself could reach $2 billion in revenue by fiscal 2028.finance.yahoo+1
Among partners, the reaction has been measured. John Snyder, CEO of Microsoft solution provider Net Friends, told CRN the shift is "unlikely to be a big deal" because clients already paying for Azure on a consumption basis will see this as an extension of an existing model. "But, man, do we get questions about both all the time," he added. Microsoft expects to showcase additional Copilot technologies at its Ignite conference in San Francisco from Nov. 17–20.crn+1
