maritimeprofessional+1investing+1nytimes+1French shipping giant CMA CGM and Oman's Asyad Group signed a $400 million framework agreement to develop, manage, and operate a multipurpose logistics terminal at Sohar port, the companies announced on Saturday. The deal was signed during Sultan Haitham bin Tariq's state visit to France, which began June 28 at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron.maritimeprofessional+4
The agreement positions Sohar as a linchpin in rerouted Gulf trade at a time when the Strait of Hormuz remains largely disrupted by the Iran conflict. Since Iran's de facto blockade began in late February, carriers have diverted vessels to alternative hubs including Sohar, Salalah, and Fujairah. The planned terminal aims to support higher cargo volumes and improve connections between Omani ports and global shipping networks, though the agreement remains at the framework stage, with timelines and operational details still to come.breakbulk+2
The signing came as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz declined sharply over the weekend following a fresh round of U.S.-Iran strikes. According to data from maritime tracking firm Kpler cited by the New York Times, 22 vessels transited the strait on Sunday, down from 38 the previous day. CMA CGM itself navigated the strait through Iranian waters near Hormuz Island, Kpler data showed. The Maritime Executive reported that CMA CGM confirmed it had moved one of its trapped vessels through the strait.maritime-executive+1
The International Maritime Organization's evacuation plan for roughly 600 ships and 11,000 sailors stranded near the strait remained on hold as of Monday. The agency had facilitated the exit of about 115 vessels before suspending operations on Thursday after a vessel was struck by a projectile off Oman's coast.nytimes+1
The terminal deal is part of a broader diplomatic push by Oman to capitalize on its geographic position outside the strait's chokepoint. Sultan Haitham's two-day state visit to France focused on elevating the strategic partnership between the two countries. For CMA CGM, which already operates offices in Sohar, the investment deepens its foothold in a port that has rapidly emerged as a key logistics gateway connecting the Gulf with Asia and Europe amid months of regional instability.investing+2
