thestreet+1thestreet+1thestreetApple is days away from its first leadership change in nearly 15 years. On September 1, John Ternus, the company's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will become chief executive officer, succeeding Tim Cook, who announced the transition in April. Cook will shift to the role of executive chairman, remaining involved in areas including government relations.apple+2
The scale of Apple's growth under Cook is difficult to overstate. When he took over from Steve Jobs in August 2011, Apple's market capitalization stood at roughly $346 billion. It now exceeds $4.6 trillion — a gain that Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan calculates at approximately $32 million per hour over the entire tenure. Free cash flow more than quadrupled, rising from $33 billion in fiscal 2011 to nearly $137 billion on a trailing-12-month basis, while total shareholder return reached roughly 2,700%.thestreet
Cook's final quarterly earnings call provided a fitting capstone: Apple posted record June-quarter revenue of $109.4 billion, up 16%, with iPhone sales climbing 22% and Mac sales rising 29%.thestreet
Bank of America reiterated a Buy rating and $380 price target on Apple this week, arguing that the CEO transition is not a reason to sell but rather a potential catalyst. Mohan expects much of Cook's operational discipline to remain intact, but sees the "potential break" with the Cook era coming in risk appetite.9to5mac+1
The bank pointed to Apple's recent move away from its long-standing net-cash-neutral objective as an early signal that management may be more willing to deploy capital. Under Ternus, that could translate into heavier R&D spending, increased capital expenditures, and larger acquisitions — strategies that were not hallmarks of Cook's tenure.thestreet+1
BofA also anticipates Apple moving more quickly into new product categories, including AI-powered glasses, camera-equipped AirPods, smart rings, home automation, and robotics.mactech
Apple's sheer size presents its own obstacle. At a market value above $4.6 trillion, even successful new products may struggle to move the needle proportionally. Mohan wrote that Ternus needs to "preserve the highly profitable system Cook built while restoring a stronger sense of technological surprise". MarketWatch News Corp noted that Wall Street hopes the new CEO will shift Apple's AI strategy through greater spending and more ambitious product innovation.marketwatch+1
Not all analysts are equally optimistic. Deutsche Bank downgraded Apple from Buy to Hold earlier this week, and questions linger about declining App Store commission revenue and the sustainability of Services growth. The iPhone 18 Pro lineup, expected to be unveiled in September, will be an early test of whether the Ternus era can maintain the momentum Cook leaves behind.blockonomi
