While wealthier populations are expected to increase their use of air conditioning as temperatures rise, around 377,000 people in areas with minimal energy access face lethal heat exposure with virtually no relief, the report finds. The contrast with wealthier neighbors is stark. Gulf states like Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia experience comparable heat but consume far more electricity for cooling. The projected increase in electricity use per person in Niger will be one-ninth that of Saudi Arabia, and communities in Niger will lose 27,000 more lives annually in 2050 due to warming than their wealthier counterpart.impactlab
"Air conditioning is a life saver, and climate change will no doubt lead to more AC adoption in today's wealthy countries," said Michael Greenstone, a co-founder of the Climate Impact Lab and professor of economics at the University of Chicago. The report argues that alongside emissions reductions, governments must invest in practical adaptation measures including heat early warning systems, expanded healthcare access, and targeted social programs.
