globalsolarcouncil+1reuters+1uaAs the Trump administration pursues its "drill, baby, drill" fossil fuel agenda, African nations are increasingly turning to cheaper Chinese solar panels and battery storage systems to meet their energy needs — a trend that is reshaping the continent's energy landscape and undercutting Washington's influence.
"Africa's solar revolution is here," said Sonia Dunlop, CEO of the Global Solar Council. "Growth is spreading to new markets across the continent, and rooftop and distributed systems are putting power directly into the hands of households and businesses."scmp
Africa installed approximately 4.5 gigawatts of new solar photovoltaic capacity in 2025, a 54 percent year-on-year increase that marked the continent's fastest solar growth on record, according to the Global Solar Council. The council's outlook report projects that Africa could install more than 33 GW of solar capacity by 2029, more than six times the amount added in 2025.globalsolarcouncil+2
The momentum has only accelerated in 2026. Chinese solar exports to Africa surged 238 percent year-on-year in March, according to Reuters , as countries rushed to import panels ahead of a Chinese export tax rebate expiration. Chinese customs data showed exports of solar cells and panels to African countries reached 123,787 tons in April 2026, an 83 percent increase from the same period a year earlier. Nigeria's solar imports alone jumped 519 percent between February and March 2026, totaling 1.2 GW, while Ethiopia imported 1.1 GW in the same month.africasustainabilitymatters+2
The wars in Ukraine and the Middle East delivered "two major fossil fuel supply shocks in four years" that "exposed the brutal cost of energy dependence," Dunlop noted, adding that cheap solar and improved battery storage had enabled rapid replacement of fossil fuels across Africa. In Nigeria, households rely on roughly 22 million gasoline and diesel generators at a cost of about $12 billion annually due to limited grid electricity. Analyst Cheta Nwanze of SBM Intelligence called high fuel prices the main incentive for renewable energy adoption, noting that affordable Chinese panels have made the switch economically viable.ua+1
The International Energy Agency forecasts that solar capacity installations in Africa this year will exceed the 2025 figure, with 15 major African markets importing more than $400 million worth of solar panels in the first quarter alone, compared with $600 million for all of 2025.ua
Chinese companies have built or financed renewable energy projects across the continent, including the 1.8 GW Benban Solar Park in Egypt, Ethiopia's Adama wind farms with a combined 204 MW capacity, and the 244 MW De Aar wind project in South Africa, which supplies electricity to more than 300,000 households. In April, the Nigerian government announced a transition to a decentralized energy system incorporating household surplus energy and interconnected mini-grids.scmp+1
The contrast between the two superpowers' energy strategies is stark. As the South China Morning Post framed it: "In the US, the push is on to 'drill, baby, drill.' In China, the national strategy is to 'walk towards the light.'"scmp
