trendforce+1wccftech+1trendforce+1TSMC Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited has reportedly accelerated the timeline for pilot production of its 1.4nm-class A14 process node, with trial runs at its Fab 20 facility in Baoshan, Hsinchu, now expected as early as the first quarter of 2027, according to a September 22 report from TrendForce citing Taiwan's Commercial Times. The move puts the world's largest contract chipmaker on a near-parallel schedule with Intel , which targets risk production of its own 14A node in the same quarter.tsmc
The updated timeline marks an acceleration from earlier expectations. As recently as July, reports based on Commercial Times indicated that the Taichung-based Fab 25 — A14's main production hub — would complete its first phase by April 2027, with trial production there beginning no earlier than the third quarter. The new reporting suggests TSMC will now use the smaller Fab 20 in Baoshan to begin pilot runs a full two quarters sooner, while Fab 25 remains on track for completion in Q2 2027 with its own pilot runs in Q3.semiwiki+1
TSMC launched its A14 CyberShuttle multi-project wafer service in Q2 2026, and smartphone, high-performance computing, and AI customers are already engaging with design tape-outs running ahead of schedule, TrendForce reported. The company's own website states that "A14 development is progressing smoothly with yield performance ahead of schedule," promising 10–15% higher speed or 25–30% lower power versus its N2 process, along with a more than 20% increase in logic density.trendforce+1
Apple has reportedly already reserved A14 capacity, with its A22 Pro system-on-chip expected to debut on the node in 2028. Combined monthly capacity at Fab 20 and Fab 25 is projected to reach 60,000 to 70,000 wafers.wccftech+1
Meanwhile, TSMC's 3nm node continues to ramp aggressively to meet demand from AI chip designers. Output at the Southern Taiwan Science Park is estimated to reach 170,000–180,000 wafers per month in Q4 2026 and exceed 200,000 wafers by the end of 2027. The company's 2nm process is also scaling, with monthly output expected to reach 90,000–100,000 wafers by the end of 2026 and climb to roughly 110,000 by mid-2027.biz.chosun+1
The accelerated A14 schedule tightens the competition with Intel's 14A node. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan has said he expects 14A risk production in Q1 2027, though Intel's official guidance is more conservative, targeting internal products in the second half of 2027 and high-volume production in 2028. Samsung, by contrast, has not planned commercialization of its own 1.4nm process until 2029, leaving it further behind in the race for the most advanced chipmaking technology.wccftech+1
