cnevpost+1cnevpost+1cnevpost+1Tesla's robotics team has been conducting a new round of supply chain audits across China's Yangtze River Delta region, inspecting suppliers of core components for its Optimus humanoid robot as the company prepares to begin production at its converted Fremont factory.
The audits, which began the week of September 16, cover companies in Ningbo, Hangzhou, Shanghai, and other parts of the Yangtze River Delta, according to a report Monday by Chinese outlet The Paper, citing a person familiar with the supply chain. The South China Morning Post first reported similar details on September 18.cnevpost+1
Companies under inspection include Tuopu Group Ningbo Tuopu Group Co., Ltd., Sanhua Intelligent Controls Zhejiang Sanhua Intelligent Controls Co., Ltd., and Joyson Electronics Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corp., all existing suppliers to Tesla's electric vehicle business. The audits are evaluating quality and compliance of production lines for joint modules, actuators, and precision structural parts.scmp+2
"Before this round of audits, these companies had all already received orders for Tesla's humanoid robot, differing only in size," an industry source told The Paper. Production is expected to begin soon after the companies pass inspection.news.sbs+1
Shares of the inspected suppliers rose following the initial reports last week, with Tuopu Group gaining 2.8%, according to Bloomberg.bloomberg
The model set for mass production is Tesla's third-generation Optimus, its first designed for volume manufacturing. It features upgraded dexterous hands and joint actuators, and will initially handle industrial tasks such as material handling and assembly line work.cnevpost
Tesla dismantled its Model S and Model X production line at the Fremont plant in 46 days earlier this year and has been converting the space into a dedicated Optimus line. As of Tesla's Q2 2026 update in July, the company said it was "installing the first-generation lines for Optimus" and expected to "start production soon". The Fremont line has a planned annual capacity of one million units, while a second line at the Texas Gigafactory is expected to begin production around summer 2027.robozaps+2
The audits underscore the central role Chinese suppliers play in Tesla's robotics ambitions. Chen Jinzhu, CEO of consulting firm Shanghai Mingliang Auto Service, told the South China Morning Post that "the inspected companies hold advantages in cost and technology over their competitors both inside and outside China".news.sbs
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously said the company's biggest competitors in humanoid robots will come from China. Rival Xpeng opened a production line for its Iron humanoid robot earlier this month, aiming for mass production by year-end. Tesla's long-term production cost target for Optimus is between $20,000 and $30,000 per unit.cnevpost+1
