Study finds active black holes may boost star formation

  • A study published Sunday in The Astrophysical Journal found that feeding supermassive black holes may aid, not prevent, star formation in their galaxies.
  • Researchers used the ESO's Very Large Telescope to survey nine nearby galaxies, finding star-forming rings and shock patterns around each active black hole.
  • "Black holes are not just consuming material at the centers of galaxies, but they're actively reshaping their surroundings," said Harvard astrophysicist Lisa Kewley.
