reuters+1reuters+1news.ligaUkraine launched a massive drone assault on the Moscow region overnight on July 20, sending more than 400 drones toward the Russian capital in what appeared to be retaliation for one of the war's largest ballistic missile barrages on Kyiv the previous night.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said more than 400 "enemy drones" were launched at the Moscow region between 8:30 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., with most neutralized by air defense systems at long range, including 85 destroyed while approaching the capital. Moscow Oblast Governor Andrei Vorobyov said the main damage was recorded in Podolsk, Domodedovo, and the Odintsovo district, with two people wounded and several civilian infrastructure facilities set ablaze.reuters
Photos and videos posted to social media showed thick black smoke rising over Podolsk, about 40 kilometers south of the Kremlin, following a reported strike on an oil depot. A warehouse belonging to Russian online retailer Wildberries was also struck in the town of Kolyedino, and warehouses at the Yuzhnye Vorota logistics park in Belye Stolby were reportedly destroyed. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its air defense systems had shot down 381 Ukrainian drones overnight across Russian regions and the Black Sea.kyivindependent+1
The drone assault followed Russia's overnight attack on Kyiv on July 19, which Ukraine's acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the largest number of ballistic missiles fired in a single attack since the start of the full-scale war. Russia fired 41 missiles of various types — including 10 Zircon hypersonic missiles, 25 Iskander-M or S-400 ballistic missiles, and others — along with 125 drones, according to Ukraine's Air Force. At least one person was killed and 16 wounded in Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelensky said, with fires and damage recorded across five districts of the capital.united24media+3
Ukrainian air defenses shot down 18 of the 41 missiles, while 23 missiles and 10 drones hit 20 locations, according to Kyiv's air force.dw+1
Separately on July 19, Russian cruise missiles struck the Golden Leo, a Guinea-Bissau-flagged cargo vessel leaving a Ukrainian port near Odesa loaded with corn. The death toll rose to 10, including crew members from Syria and India and a pilot from the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority, with eight survivors rescued. Ukraine's Navy said the ship was hit by three Kh-59/Kh-69 cruise missiles.news.liga+2
Ukraine's broader campaign against Russian energy infrastructure also continued. Earlier in the week, Ukrainian forces struck 20 Russian shadow fleet vessels near occupied Crimea, reducing ferry capacity across the Kerch Strait by 75%, according to Ukraine's drone force commander.kyivindependent+1
