wtaq+1wtaqwtaqA data breach at Tata Electronics is wider than initially reported, with leaked files extending beyond Apple and Tesla to include purported documents from chip giants TSMC Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited and Qualcomm , according to Reuters reporting published on Thursday.wtaq+1
Reuters found at least 16 files and folders of purported TSMC documents and 23 from Qualcomm among the data posted to the dark web by ransomware group World Leaks. Both chipmakers produce components used in iPhones. Among the leaked materials was a 2022 document marked "TSMC Secret" containing product reliability test details with photographs, and a 2023 "Apple Silicon Engineering Group" document mapping Apple part numbers to TSMC's, with Apple employee names visible in the revision history.wtaq

In response to the breach, Tata Electronics has restricted remote access to sensitive internal tools — such as purchase order systems — to select employees only, a Tata source told Reuters. Previously, access to such systems was more liberal.wtaq
The company has hired a global consultant to conduct a forensic audit and reported the incident to the Indian government and its clients. Apple's security team is working closely with Tata on near- and long-term measures, according to an industry official briefed on the matter.wtaq
"Tata Electronics has hardened access to its sensitive internal systems," the Tata source said. "The investigation is ongoing".wtaq

World Leaks claimed to have published more than 204,341 files totaling over 630 gigabytes of Tata Electronics data. TechCrunch, which first confirmed the breach on June 22 after files appeared on a hacker forum, reported that the data included Apple supplier specifications, Tesla manufacturing documents, employee emails, and passport copies.techcrunch+1
The breach represents a setback for Apple's supply chain diversification into India, where 26% of the world's iPhones are expected to be produced in 2026, up from 6% four years ago, according to research firm Counterpoint. Tata Electronics, led by former Intel executive Randhir Thakur, is central to Apple's effort to shift iPhone production outside China.wtaq
