Starmer resigns as UK prime minister after two years

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, bowing to months of mounting pressure from within his own Labour Party less than two years after leading it to a landslide election victory. His departure makes him the latest in a revolving door of British leaders, with the country set to welcome its seventh prime minister in a decade.reuters+3

A Pragmatist Undone

Starmer said he would remain as caretaker prime minister until a successor is chosen, with nominations to open on July 9 and a new leader expected to be in place before Parliament returns in September. Once hailed as the leader who would bring pragmatism and stability to Britain after years of political chaos, Starmer was ultimately undone by what Reuters described as "the very lack of ideology that propelled him to power."nytimes+2

The resignation follows a disastrous set of local elections in May, when the populist Reform UK party made major gains at Labour's expense. Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, called Monday for a general election "to fix broken Britain," though Labour retains its parliamentary majority and the next general election is not scheduled until 2029.usatoday+1

Burnham, the 'King of the North'

The frontrunner to succeed Starmer is Andy Burnham, 56, the former Greater Manchester mayor who won a special parliamentary election in the Makerfield constituency on June 19 with nearly 55% of the vote. Burnham's decisive victory over Reform UK's Rob Kenyon cemented his status as the leading contender, with polling of Labour members showing roughly 61% backing him in a direct contest.weaa+2

Burnham has styled himself as a relatable figure from northern England, favouring casual attire over Westminster formality. His path from cabinet minister under Gordon Brown to elected mayor and now back to Parliament has been described as a journey from insider to outsider and back again.france24+1

What Comes Next

Starmer's exit continues a period of instability that has gripped British politics since the 2016 Brexit referendum. If Burnham runs unopposed, he could take over as early as July; otherwise, a contested leadership election would conclude before September. British voters elect parties rather than individual leaders, meaning Labour will remain in government without a general election.usatoday+1
