apnews.com+1.nbcsports.com+1.sportcal.com+1.Russian hockey teams must be allowed back into International Ice Hockey Federation championships, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled Friday, October 30. The decision overturns a ban that has been in place since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. A three-judge panel ruled unanimously that the IIHF's arguments about "safety, security and other concerns were not supported by sufficient evidence." It set aside the federation's Council decision with immediate effect.nbcsports.com+1
The ruling covers five events: the 2027 men's and women's world championships, the World Junior Championship, and the men's and women's under-18 championships. It does not cover the 2030 Olympic tournaments.deseret.com+1
The IIHF said it was disappointed and maintained that its decisions "were necessary to protect the safety and security of all participants." It added that it "respects the authority of CAS and will act in accordance with its ruling". The federation warned that competitions are already well into preparation, and that changing who takes part means reworking formats, schedules, travel and security. The IIHF had voted in January not to bring Russia back for the 2026-27 season and confirmed that position in June, which led to the appeal.iihf.com+1
CAS did not rule on whether Russia must play as a neutral team without national symbols. The Athletic reported that this means Russian teams could return in their traditional uniforms. Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyaryov said the court had "recognized the demands of the Russian Hockey Federation on key points as justified".nytimes.com+2
Russia's first chance to return is the World Junior Championship in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, which runs from December 26 to January 5. The men's world championship follows in Germany from May 14 to 30. Ukraine is among the 16 teams already qualified for that tournament, and CAS gave no guidance on how to fit Russia in. The women's world championship that starts November 6 in Denmark is not covered by the ruling.amp.dw.com+2
Several national federations expressed disappointment. Finland said it would not stop its athletes from playing. Hockey Canada said it was "seeking clarity," and Sweden's federation president said "a boycott is not on the table". German federation chairman Frank Lutz said, "We reject the return of Russian national teams to international ice hockey tournaments".deseret.com+1
The International Olympic Committee lifted its recommended restrictions on Russian athletes on July 7, but international federations such as the IIHF still decide who plays in their world championships. Russia missed this year's Olympic hockey tournaments. The IOC's July decision and Friday's ruling together could open a path for Russian hockey players to compete at the 2030 Winter Games in the French Alps.cbc.ca+2
