The deal, which does not disclose financial terms, brings one of the most widely used smart contract security platforms under the umbrella of the world's largest financial data and ratings provider as institutional adoption of blockchain-based products accelerates.tradingview+1
Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin develops open-source smart contract software and provides security audits for blockchain protocols and financial institutions. Its Contracts library has supported more than $37 trillion in value transferred and underpins infrastructure behind nine of the top ten stablecoins and all of the top ten tokenized money market funds, according to the announcement. The company has completed over 900 security engagements and identified more than 10,000 vulnerabilities before projects reached production. Its clients include Circle , Uniswap, Aave, DTCC, Fidelity Digital Assets and WisdomTree .kucoin+1
"Our digital assets strategy centers on bringing trusted data, benchmarks and transparent risk assessment to markets as they move onchain," said Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings.investing+1
OpenZeppelin will operate as a separate S&P Global business unit and retain its name. CEO Demian Brener will continue leading the company, reporting to Le Pallec. The company's open-source Contracts libraries will remain free and publicly maintained, with every released version staying open source permanently.crypto+2
The acquisition follows S&P Global's $110 million strategic investment in Paris-based crypto market data provider Kaiko, announced on Sept. 14. That round included participation from BNP Paribas, Coinbase Ventures, Nasdaq Ventures and Royal Bank of Canada , among others.crypto+1
S&P Global has been steadily building its digital asset infrastructure. Through a partnership with Chainlink announced in October 2025, the company made its stablecoin risk assessments available onchain. In August, S&P Global Ratings assigned an AAAm principal stability fund rating to BlackRock's tokenized money market fund.crypto
The acquisition comes amid rising security losses in digital asset markets. Crypto security losses reached $1.1 billion across 212 verified incidents during the first half of 2026, according to security firm Blockaid, with 74% of stolen funds resulting from operational security failures rather than smart contract exploits. Compromised keys, signers and infrastructure accounted for 88.3% of roughly $764 million stolen during the second quarter.crypto
