  • HHMI Janelia Research Campus and Google Research published the first complete wiring diagram of a male fruit fly's central nervous system in the journal Cell on Thursday.
  • The map spans more than 166,000 neurons and over 11,000 cell types, building on a female fruit fly brain map released in 2024 that covered about 140,000 neurons.
  • Companion studies already used the data to uncover sex-specific neural circuits tied to courtship and aggression, and Janelia is now pursuing vertebrate brain maps.
