aljazeera+1kurdistan24+1kurdistan24+1A diplomatic dispute has erupted between Iran and Qatar over the fate of three Iranian military pilots Tehran says were captured after their jets were shot down earlier this year, adding a new layer of tension to a region already roiled by the U.S.-Iran war and escalating attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran revealed on Saturday that three Su-24 fighter pilots — identified as Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Omran Behraveshian — were captured alive by Qatari forces after their aircraft crashed during a March mission against what Tehran described as "an enemy military base" in Qatar. General Mohammad Bagherzadeh, commander of the Iranian Armed Forces' committee for missing personnel, disclosed the information in a letter to International Committee of the Red Cross President Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, saying the pilots had been held incommunicado for six months without access to their families or Iranian officials.jpost+3
Qatar swiftly and categorically denied the allegations. Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said Doha was "surprised by the misleading statements" from Iranian officials, according to Al Jazeera Arabic. Al-Ansari said the aircraft had breached Qatari airspace in March and failed to respond to warnings, after which Qatari forces engaged the targets. Search and rescue teams later recovered the remains of one pilot, Majid Kazemi, and Qatar said it had contacted Iran to coordinate a handover — but Tehran had not responded.aljazeera+2
The allegations are particularly charged because Qatar has served as a mediating party between the United States and Iran. Kurdistan24 reported that Doha's rapid denial reflected concern that the Iranian claim could undermine its credibility as a neutral intermediary.kurdistan24
Separately, the United Arab Emirates blamed Iran for firing drones at two tankers operated by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company on Aug. 13 as the vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz, the Associated Press reported. No injuries were reported. The UAE Foreign Ministry called the attacks "piracy" and "a direct threat to the stability of the region". ADNOC said a total of 15 of its vessels have been attacked while transiting the strait since the war began in February.aljazeera+1
The attacks came as President Donald Trump declared the U.S. has "total control" of the waterway and hinted he would declare it U.S. territory. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps rejected that claim, insisting the strait "is under the complete management and control of the Islamic Republic of Iran".yahoo
The overlapping disputes underscore the fragility of diplomatic efforts to end the broader conflict. U.S.-Iran negotiations launched in June have stalled, with a naval blockade reinstated in July after both sides accused the other of violating a memorandum of understanding. Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, warned on social media that Washington had "miscalculated" due to "intelligence failures," while Trump told reporters, "I don't trust Iran".yahoo
